When Michel Alvarez, WonderChess founder, introduced chess to his son, Jean-Michel, using a standard chess set and instruction book, it did not go well. Jean-Michel was quickly bored and overwhelmed - common reasons children lose interest in chess. Then the Aha! solution sprang into Michel's mind - design chess pieces that can contain hidden, "tricks or treats" to provide fun, encouragement and immediate reward.
